Dean has been associated with ROW since 1980, first as a national level swimmer and then a developmental coach beginning in 1981.

His coaching career has many national and international highlights including Olympic Coach experience and success at the 1996, 2000, 2004 Olympic Games. Dean has been the Head Coach of the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks since 1987 where the team has enjoyed ranking in the top 3 of the OUA and a national ranking of 5th. He also is a part-time instructor with the Kinesiology department at WLU.

Dean’s involvement in swimming goes beyond the deck, he has been on the Board of Directors for both Swim Ontario and Swimming Canada. Dean chaired the Ontario Swim Coaches Association for 6 years as well he has been on the committee for the Long Term Development Strategy for Ontario as well as a co-author with Dr. Jeno Tihanyi the 2004 Post Olympic Review.

Dean has been named the 2009 Canada Games head coach for Team Ontario as well as the Mentor Coach for Ontario swimming since the 2008-09 season. He is continually being recognized with Provincial and Canadian coaching awards as well he is one of only a few coaches in Canadian swim history to coach swimmers to 4 or more Olympic Games.
