Meet the Coaches
Coordinator: Kaitlyn Schultz

The Region of Waterloo Swim Club welcomes Kaitlyn Schultz to our coaching staff. Kaitlyn brings her experience, enthusiasm and imaginative new ideas to our young swimmer's programming here at ROW. She will be lead coach for our Silver and Bronze groups as well as coordinating our youngest swimmers in the Tiny Olympic Prospect (TOP 1) group. "We are working on developing a larger novice program" says ROW President Tracy Bennett. The Kitchener Waterloo Swim School, our novice program for ages 5-10, will operate out of 3 locations this season. "This program expansion is our commitment to develop swim skills in the youth of the community." Collaborating with both cities as their affiliated Club, ROW is excited about adding another full-time career coach to our line-up.
Kaitlyn's coaching philosophy closely mirror's ROW's commitment to the sport of swimming, community and youth, "Although the idea of personal best is a prominent theme in my coaching, the concept of "team" is just as important. I want my athletes and their family members to share values of friendship, team pride, and community support."
Kaitlyn has been affiliated with swimming in Ontario for over 15 years. Kaitlyn places an emphasis on stroke mechanics, and technique, while making swimming fun. In 2009, Kaitlyn accepted the position of head coach of the Variety Village Flames where she coached both able bodied and paralympic swimmers of all ages. During her tenure there, she successfully placed a swimmer on two consecutive Paralympic World Championship teams.
Kaitlyn recently completed her studies towards a B.A. in professional writing at York University and continues her studies towards a bachelor in social work at the University of Waterloo.
"I am truly excited to be coming to ROW as I feel that it is a natural progression to my career having taught swimming at various levels and most recently as head coach of the Variety Village Flames in Toronto" said Ms. Schultz.

Coach Dave Hughes

The 2010/2011 season will be my 8th season coaching with ROW and I am back with the Silver group for a third time. I began coaching for the club as a Summer Swim Camp Coach in 2003 and since then I have coached as the Top 1 Coordinator, Summer Swim Camp Coordinator, and AD3 (Bronze) Group Coach and Coordinator. I am First Aid and NLS certified and I am also currently working on my Skills Coach certification through the NCCP.
I recently retired from a 15 year competitive swimming career in which I competed for ROW, the Waterloo Collegiate Swim Team, and the Wilfrid Laurier Varsity Swim Team. As a club swimmer I swam for Dean Boles and through his coaching I was able to compete in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Swimming Trials as well as the 2005 Canada Summer Games. As a Varsity Athlete at WLU I was able to qualify for the CIS championships in each of my four year on the team and in both 2006 and 2007 I won the 1500 m freestyle at the OUA championships. Following my second year of swimming at WLU I was chosen as Male Team Captain and I served in this position for my two remaining years on the team. During my final year with WLU Swimming I used my role as Team Captain to raise student awareness of the closure of the WLU pool and was able to run a successful referendum campaign that pledged nearly $1.2 million towards pool repairs. Along with the support of ROW, the Federal and Provincial Governments, and the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo we were able to extend the life of the pool for an estimated 20 years. For my efforts in this project I was awarded the Bill Haggstrom Trophy for Male Contributing Most to Athletics at WLU and a Builder Award from ROW.
Outside of the pool I am a student and recent graduate from Wilfrid Laurier with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. I will now use my background in these areas to attend the new School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo beginning in January 2010. I’m looking forward to continuing my education in the Waterloo area so that I can continue to live here and coach with ROW.

Lead Coach Tim Sauvé
Tim has been coaching for the past 6 years with McMaster University, also 2 of those years he helped with Golden Horseshoe Aquatic Club. Tim has worked with every level of athlete, and has seen what it takes to succeed.
Tim Sauvé took Chelsey Gotell to the German Open in Berlin, the Para Can-Ams in San Antonio Texas, and was one of the major influences for her in her preparation in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics where she won Gold in the 200 IM and the 100 Bk.
During his time at McMaster Tim helped build the team from 1 male national qualifier and 4 female national qualifiers to last year they had 24 athletes competing at the national championships. Tim took a keen interest in Strength and Conditioning, he was hired by Steve Lidstone (Strength and Condoning coordinator) and together they put a program in place that has become well known throughout Swim Ontario. He has helped organize and run many provincial level camps for the strength and condoning component, and also a national level camp which was the key training for the 2009 Pan Pac games in Melbourne, Australia.
Tim also has age group level coaching experience, during his first two years as a coach Tim helped Golden Horseshoe Aquatic Club. Tim was the assistant age group coach and the head novice coach. He was able to help the novice program grow tremendously in those two years, and also helped the age group program take off.
Tim as an athlete had a late start in the sport of swimming. He started at the age of 15 for the Chatham Y Pool Sharks. There he blossomed, making his age group national time his first year of swimming, and continued to be a national level athlete throughout his entire 8 year career. After graduation of High School Tim headed off to McMaster University and was very successful. He was an OUA all star all three of those years, and won an OUA Championship in his second year. Coach Russ Franklin
Longtime Montreal-based coach Russ Franklin has been named the new skipper of the Region of Waterloo Swim Club.
The Winnipeg native has drawn rave reviews from the local swim community, including a former ROW coach and the man he will replace.
“I think (in a lot of ways) he’s better than I am,” said former ROW boss Dean Boles, now Swim Ontario’s mentor coach. “He knows his stuff. I think the club and the university will be really happy with him.”
Franklin enters his new position, which includes dual duties as head coach of Wilfrid Laurier University’s swim team, after spending 35 years in Montreal.
He is the former head coach of the Pointe-Claire Swim Club and the Beaconsfield Bluefins.
Franklin has a proven track record of guiding Olympic-calibre swimmers including Craig Hutchison and Stephanie Horner, Boles said.
His approach is a patient one, Franklin said in a news release.
“Over the years I have been fortunate to work with a lot of talented, hard-working athletes that I have developed from the novice level to the national level. I like to think long term for each swimmer which allows them to develop at their own pace.”
ROW, the 35-year-old Olympic juggernaut, launched the international swim careers of Victor Davis, Mike West, Laura Nicholls, Jennifer Button and, most recently, Keith Beavers.
Franklin, in his early 50s, said he was impressed by the club’s commitment to excellence at all levels.
“I think the greater Kitchener-Waterloo area is a vibrant and growing community that can make a huge contribution to the sport both in Ontario and the rest of Canada.”
Franklin replaces departing ROW head coach Nandi Kormendi who recently handed in his resignation.
Kormendi also sang Franklin’s praises. “He’s a strong coach,” he said. “He’s a nice guy. He’s a friend.”
Franklin assumes his duties on Sept. 1.
